Talkin’ ‘Bout My G-G-G-Generation

There is constant media hype about Millenials, Boomers, and other generations; how they live, what they buy, and how & why they make donations. For instance, the title of this post is a nod to Boomers (like me!). Yet Generational Theory is just that, a theory, and these vast generalizations don’t apply to everyone.

In April, I was delighted to present a workshop on Stewardship for All Generations at the Unitarian Universalist Association Mid-America Regional Assembly on this topic. To me, a much more useful framework to use when trying to reach different people in our congregations is to consider cohorts by economic lifestage. Are people just out of college, in their first job, or moving toward retirement? Do they have young kids or are they beloved elders? In the workshop, I presented information about both of these ways of looking at age and contributions.
